Massage Guide
The fog rolls in off Ocean Beach, the neck stiffens, the shoulders climb toward the ears — and somewhere on Balboa Street, there's a quiet room set up to undo exactly that.
What Shiatsu Actually Is
Shiatsu literally means "finger pressure" in Japanese. Unlike Swedish or deep tissue massage, a Shiatsu therapist doesn't use oil, and you don't undress. You lie on a padded surface under a blanket while the therapist applies rhythmic pressure along your body's meridians — energy pathways mapped out by traditional Chinese medicine thousands of years ago.
The practical result? Your overworked sympathetic nervous system calms down. Blood circulates better. The knots in your shoulders and lower back start to let go. A lot of clients tell us they didn't realize how tense they were until they stood up and felt the difference.

A Small Neighborhood Practice, Not a Spa
We're a small practice — not a chain, not a spa with a lobby full of candles and a hard sell on packages. You walk in, tell us what hurts, and we get to work. Most of our regulars are from the 94121 zip code: teachers from Washington High School, nurses winding down after shifts at Kaiser on Geary, remote workers who've been hunched over laptops all week. If that sounds like you, come try a session.
Folded Into the Rhythm of the Outer Richmond
The Outer Richmond has a rhythm of its own — foggy mornings, Balboa Street's low-key strip of restaurants and shops, Golden Gate Park a few blocks south. A lot of our clients stop in after a long walk through the park or before a meal on Clement Street. We're positioned right in the middle of the neighborhood, which means you can fold a massage into your Saturday without any kind of special trip.
Why People Wish They'd Come Sooner
One thing we hear often: people waited longer than they should have. They put off the massage because they weren't sure if Shiatsu was right for them, or they didn't want to commit to a full hour, or they just kept meaning to call. A 30-minute session is $65 and a solid way to find out if this style of bodywork clicks with you. If it does, you'll understand why the regulars keep coming back.
